Why "Reviewing" Isn't Enough: You Need to Audit Your Own Data

Most business owners treat their federal registration like a terms of service agreement—they scroll to the bottom and click "I Accept." This is a reckless strategy. The government is not asking for your opinion; they are asking for a legal attestation of your business reality. If that reality doesn't match the data, you are in trouble. Federal Contracting Center challenges you to stop "reviewing" and start auditing these five specific points that determine your fate in the federal market.

First, audit your "Business Start Date." This sounds trivial, but it isn't. I see businesses change this date to match their re-incorporation or a name change. Stop doing that. Your start date signals your maturity and experience. If you reset it, you look like a startup. Conversely, if the date doesn't match the state record, the validation fails. You need to verify this against your Secretary of State filings, not your memory. Accuracy here prevents you from looking like a risk to a Contracting Officer.

Second, challenge your own "Small Business Status." You might think you are small, but have you calculated your 5-year rolling average revenue correctly? The SBA changed the rules recently. If you are just guessing or using last year's tax return without doing the math, you might be certifying yourself as small when you are actually "other than small." During your SAM renewal, getting this wrong constitutes size fraud. It opens you up to protests from competitors who will gladly do the math for you and get you kicked off a contract.

Third, look at your "NAICS Codes." Are you hoarding codes? Listing 50 codes doesn't make you look capable; it makes you look desperate. Audit your list. Remove the ones you haven't touched in five years. Add the ones where you actually make money. This data point controls what bid notifications you receive. If your list is garbage, your inbox will be garbage. Be ruthless and precise.

Fourth, check your "URL and Corporate Website." It is shocking how many profiles link to dead pages or "under construction" sites. When a buyer looks you up, that link is their first impression. If it’s broken, they assume your business is broken. Verify that the URL is live, secure (HTTPS), and leads to a page that screams "government contractor."

Fifth, audit your "keywords" in the DSBS section. This isn't technically part of the core SAM form, but it's the only part that matters for marketing. If your keywords are generic trash like "solutions" or "services," you are wasting digital real estate. Use the specific terminology of your industry. Audit your search terms by thinking like a buyer, not a seller.
